टाटा स्टील चेस टूर्नामेंट का आयोजन नीदरलैंड के विज्क ऑन जी में किया जा रहा है. प्रतिष्ठित टूर्नामेंट के 87वें संस्करण में आज एक विवाद पैदा हो गया जब भारतीय ग्रैंड मास्टर से एक खिलाड़ी ने हाथ मिलाने से इनकार कर दिया. इसका कारण पूरी तरह से धार्मिक था. सोशल मीडिया पर वायरल वीडियो में देखा जा सकता है कि आर वैशाली ने चौथे दौर के मुकाबले की शुरुआत से पहले उज्बेकिस्तान के नोदिरबेक याकूबोव के खिलाफ हैंड शेक करने के लिए हाथ बढ़ाया, लेकिन नोदिरबेक याकुबोव बिना जवाब दिए बैठ गए, जिससे वैशाली असहज महसूस कर रही थीं. 
सोशल मीडिया पर वायरल वीडियो में देखा जा सकता है कि वैशाली ने याकुबोव से हाथ मिलाने के लिए खुद ही पहली की, लेकिन उज्बेक खिलाड़ी ने इससे मना कर दिया. सोशल मीडिया पर ही उनके पिछले मैचों में विरोधी खिलाड़ियों के साथ हैंड शेक के सबूत दिए जा रहे हैं. जिससे लोगों ने उन पर नस्लभेदी होने का भी आरोप लगा दिया है. यह हाथ ने मिलाने से भी बुरी बात है. 
सोशल मीडिया पर जब यह वीडियो वायरल हो गया, तो याकूबबोव ने ‘एक्स’ पर एक लंबी प्रतिक्रिया पोस्ट की. इसमें उन्होंने कहा कि, वे वैशाली और उनके छोटे भाई आर. प्रज्ञानंदधा का पूरा सम्मान करते हैं, लेकिन वे “धार्मिक कारणों से अन्य महिलाओं को नहीं छूते हैं.” याकूबबोव, जो एक मुसलमान हैं, ने लिखा, “मैं वैशाली के साथ खेल में घटित स्थिति के बारे में बताना चाहता हूँ. महिलाओं और भारतीय शतरंज खिलाड़ियों के प्रति पूरे सम्मान के साथ, मैं सभी को सूचित करना चाहता हूँ कि मैं धार्मिक कारणों से अन्य महिलाओं को नहीं छूता हूँ.”
नोदिरबेक याकुबोवने लिखा, “मैं वैशाली और उसके भाई का भारत के सबसे मजबूत शतरंज खिलाड़ियों के रूप में सम्मान करता हूं. अगर मेरे व्यवहार से उन्हें ठेस पहुंची है तो मैं माफी मांगता हूं। मेरे पास कुछ अतिरिक्त स्पष्टीकरण हैं: 1. शतरंज हराम नहीं है.” उन्होंने बताया, “मैं वही करता हूं जो मुझे करना चाहिए. मैं दूसरों पर विपरीत लिंग के लोगों से हाथ न मिलाने या महिलाओं से हिजाब या बुर्का पहनने का आग्रह नहीं करता. यह उनका काम है कि वे क्या करें.” याकूबबोव ने कहा कि रोमानिया की इरिना बुलमागा के खिलाफ आठवें राउंड के खेल में ऐसी स्थिति से बचने के लिए उन्होंने अपनी धार्मिक मान्यताओं के बारे में उन्हें पहले ही बता दिया था.

A video of the incident has gone viral on social media.The Tata Steel Chess Tournament is being held in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands. In its prestigious 87th edition, a controversy arose when an Uzbek player refused to shake hands with an Indian Grandmaster due to religious reasons. In a viral social media video, R Vaishali can be seen extending her hand for a handshake before the fourth-round match against Uzbekistan’s Nodirbek Yakubboev, but Yakubboev sat down without responding, leaving Vaishali visibly uncomfortable.
The viral video shows Vaishali making the first move to shake hands, but the Uzbek player refused. Social media users have pointed out that he has shaken hands with his opponents in previous matches, leading some to accuse him of being discriminatory. Many have argued that refusing a handshake in this manner is worse than simply declining.After the video went viral, Yakubboev posted a lengthy response on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter). He stated that he fully respects Vaishali and her younger brother, R Praggnanandhaa, but due to religious reasons, he does not touch women. Yakubboev, a practicing Muslim, wrote:
> "I want to clarify the situation that happened with Vaishali in the game. With full respect for women and Indian chess players, I want to inform everyone that I do not touch other women for religious reasons."
Yakubboev continued,
> "I respect Vaishali and her brother as two of India’s strongest chess players. If my behavior hurt her, I sincerely apologize. Here are some additional clarifications:
1. Chess is not haram.
2. What I did before (referring to the game with Divya in 2023 and similar cases) I now consider wrong for myself.
3. I do what I believe I must. I do not insist that others refrain from shaking hands with the opposite gender or that women must wear hijabs or burqas. That is their personal choice."
Yakubboev mentioned that before his eighth-round game against Romania’s Irina Bulmaga, he had informed her in advance about his religious beliefs to avoid such a situation.
After defeating Yakubboev, Vaishali also refrained from extending her hand for a handshake. After eight rounds, the Indian player has four points, with five rounds remaining. The 23-year-old Yakubboev, who became a Grandmaster in 2019, lost this match and currently has only three points after eight rounds in the Challengers section.
R Vaishali is one of India’s top chess players. She was a key member of the Indian team that won gold at the Women's Chess Olympiad last year by defeating Slovenia.
